Genus: Meriones Origin: Mongolia Size: 6 inch body with a 6 inch tail. Life Span: Average 4-6 years. Temperament: Curious, bold, amusing and social. Diet: A fortified gerbil mix and millet seed, fruits and veggies, in moderation. also, crickets and mealworms can be given Housing: Use either a 20.5 X 10.25 X 10.25 inch wire cage, aquarium or a modular system. Bedding: Aspen shavings or Carefresh® Water: A water bottle should be available at all times and should be changed daily. Temperature/Humidity: 60-70 degrees they can not handle hot temps. Lighting: Dimly lite area. Companionship: Social, can to be kept in groups. Sexing: Adult males have a large bulge at the base of the tail which is their scrotum. This is totally absent from females. This bulge is obvious by 6 weeks of age and can be seen at least two weeks earlier. Female gerbils have more obvious nipples. I know some people who say they can sex gerbils at a few days old by this method but it isn't one I would recommend. Finally and most importantly, the distance between the urinary and anal openings in female gerbils is much smaller than it is in males. This method can be used reliably from at least three weeks of age. See photos at http://www.rodent.demon.co.uk/gerbils/gender.htm Pros: Seldom bite. Very active, curious and adventurous both day and night. Very clean. Cons: Require a habitat that allows for ample daily exercise. Small, fast moving animals can be difficult for young children to handle. Can nibble on fingers and be easily hurt if squeezed. Easy to lose if they escape from habitat. Note: Must have items to chew to wear down constantly growing teeth. Habitat requires plenty of room and nest building material as well as a medium for burrowing. |
